   What exactly is grilling? What is a girdled stem? We have cedar taking over our pasture.

     Girdling is an an ancient form of tree control. A small strip of bark is removed from the circumference of the tree, starving the roots of nutrients and killing the tree. Chemical girdling is applying a herbicide around the circumference of the tree with or without removing bark. Grilling was likely a typo. A recent Prairie Ecologist blog is about cedars.
